                                   AIDS Awareness Day  

The Departments of Botany, Microbiology and Biotechnology organized Slogan Writing, Essay Writing, Drawing and Poster Presentation Competitions on the topic “Effects of AIDS on the Society” on 30^th November & 1^st December 2011 in connection with the “World Aids Day”.

The Dept. of Botany organized a Slogan writing and Essay writing Competitions on 30^th Nov, 2011 on the  eve of World AIDS Day i.e. 1^st December 2011 to create awareness on this disease. The programme begin with the welcome address by Dr. B. Siva Kumari, Head, Department of Botany.  Sruthi, NCP-27  judged 1^st prize and N. Devi  Singh NCP-08 bagged 2^nd prize.  In the drawing competitions and Salar Sharief  got first prize in slogan writing event.

World AIDS Day, observed on 1st December every year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Government and health officials observe the day, often with speeches or forums on the AIDS topics. Since 1995, the President of the United States has made an official proclamation on World AIDS Day. Governments of other nations have followed suit and issued similar announcements.         

From its inception until 2004, UNAIDS spearheaded the World AIDS Day campaign, choosing annual themes in consultation with other global health organizations.

As of 2008, each year's World AIDS Day theme is chosen by the World AIDS Campaign's Global Steering Committee after extensive consultation with people, organizations and government agencies involved in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.  For each World AIDS Day from 2005 through 2010, the theme was "Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise." with a yearly sub-theme. This overarching theme is designed to encourage political leaders to keep their commitment to achieve universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care, and support by the year 2010.

This theme is not specific to World AIDS Day, but is used year-round in WAC's efforts to highlight HIV/AIDS awareness within the context of other major global events including the G8 Summit. World AIDS Campaign also conducts "in-country" campaigns throughout the world, like the Student Stop AIDS Campaign, an infection-awareness campaign targeting young people throughout the UK.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS IN DIFFERENT COMPETETITIONS

•  Ms .K. Vandu (DB 14), NSS Volunteer, won the State Level National Service Scheme Best Volunteer Award for the year 2010-2011 from Government of Andhra Pradesh and she has been presented the award on 24.09.2011 by the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, A.P.

• N. Sandeep (DB 17) and Shariff (DB 04) won the Consolation Prize in Paper Presentation competition organized by the Department of Botany, JMJ College for Woman, Tenali, on 23.09.2011.

• K. Vandu (DB-14) won the Gold Medal in triple jump and Bronze Medal in 100mts.

• Cadet Aravind (RB-67) was adjudged the Best Cadet in Drill.

The Students of the Department of Botany have actively participated in the Degree cultural festival and won 2^nd prize in Quiz and also bagged several prizes in events like first place inSolo singing and  Rangoli etc. In overall performance the Department stood 4^th place and gave tough competitions to other departments.

Botany association students have actively participated in Intramural games and Athletes. Our students  have bagged 3^rd place in Basket ball.

Paper presentation by students

The Students of Department of Botany Mr. Sandeep and Mr. Shariff of III B.Sc participated and presented a paper on Impact of Pollution on human health organized by J.M.J College for Women, Tenali on 23rd September 2011. Mr. Sandeep got consolation prize in the paper presentation.

     In connection with World ozone day the Department of Botany organized an inter-departmental paper presentation competitions  on importance of ozone layer being aware of the importance of this burning issue of today's contemporary world.

Srinivas rao,the staff co-ordinator organized the program to enrich and make  students aware in the realm of environment, the department of Botany organized interdepartmental paper presentations on  the following  topics.

            On 15-09-2011 This has been endured to students from students itself by making a platform to them for their paper presentations  on above specified topics, where  Mrs. K. Eswari  head department of P.G ,Botany and  Mr. K. Bala Chandra Head department of Microbiology are judges for this  session.

            And then on 16-09-2011  In the concerns of World Ozone Day department organized a guest lecture on global warming  by Mr.T. Sri Kumar Sr.lecturer in physics Andhra Loyola College explained need to protect environment from green house gases , global warming and pollution.  

      Prizes were awarded to the winners of the session  - Miss.K. Shoba  bagged the  first prize followed by prem kumar and azim .and a consolation prize to Mr. Jakker and then Sandeep , the student chairman proposed vote of thanks closing the program.

College to Garden visit (04-09-2011)

    The Botanic Garden is the most compact, yet diverse collection of plants in the college and it  is open throughout the year for you to visit and enjoy.

                
       The  Students of Ayurveda college, Vijayawada accompanied by Dr. venugopal taxonomist, retired professor of Madurai University and Mr. Sastry retired E.E, Vijayawada, The Secretary of Ayurveda society  visited Andhra Loyola College Botanical and Herbal garden on 04-09-2011.

          As a part of curriculum, where the students were made familiar with many herbal and Ayurveda plants in our herbal and botanical gardens. The significance of the plants and of their study was explained by Dr. Venu Gopal and Mrs. B. Siva Kumari.

          The rare and endemic plants which they only find in their books made them amused when seen in our garden .Since it was more bringing them towards their work and study in reality and practical it was very informative and vital in their academics.

FRIENDLY VINAYAKA AWERENESS PROGRAMME-(31-08-2011)

                 The Staff and students of department of Botany are involved in Friendly vinayaka awereness programme organized by A.P.Pollution control board at PWD grounds, Vijayawada on 31-08-2011 to educate the public regarding usuage of clay idols instead of plaster of parice and also displayed 21 varities of patri.

                It has been unfolding since couple of years the importance of ensuring vinayaka chathurthi with eco friendly idols. And it is the senior citizens responsibility to make the generations purse the importance of the traditions and rituals which has been passed on to us, it is with these concerns  of these two issues that the A.P Pollution Control Board has put forth the proposal of ensuring the people of Vijayawada the meaning of using 21 patris being used in vinayaka puja and also distributed clay idols of vinayaka to the public to expand the realm of knowledge of environmental pollution due to chemicals used in making ganapthis.

                    
                   The department of Botany was invited by A.P Pollution Control Board to display the 21  varieties of patri and there the students explained the importance of those plants  for using in the puja and their vital role in our way of life .

Brihati is used for asthma, cough, constipation, and used for women during post natal period. Bilva, which purifies water, is used for dysentery. Durva grass skin is helpful in arresting bleeding, anemia, while the Badari is used for digestive disorders, wounds and injuries, in treating blood impurities, and maintaining the voice.

The students said that dattura is used for treating joint pains, abdominal, skin diseases, and hair fall. More importantly it is widely used in treating poisonous bites. Apa marga and Tulsi were used for digestive disorders and respiratory diseases respectively. Choota or mango leaves, are helpful in treating diabetics, and for cracked heals and throat related diseases. Karaveera is used for treating leprosy, wounds, injuries and hair fall, whle Vishnu kranta patra is used for nervous related diseases and memory power, and daadimi is used for dysentery. One Day Field Trip to Thennure to visit organic forming centre

 Department of Botany organised one day field trip to Tenneru

          The Dept of the Botany  had arranged a one day field trip to Thennure for the students of second  year opting Herbal medicine as  general elective, the trip was started at 7:00am on 28-08-2011 from college. 30 students had taken part in this trip. About 11:30 am we reached the place, There Mr. M.V. Madhu Sudhana Rao, nature lover  had intuited us with a warm welcome and he explained the  different methods in organic forming and vermicompost preparation. and then we had the privilege of spectating different types medicinal plants.

                 We had returned to home by 5:00 pm . On an enquiry the students’ responded well about the trip and expressed their views, that the trip was very joyful, informative and explorative. Mrs. T. Rose Mary accompanied the students.Thanks to Mr. M.V. Madhu Sudhana Rao Garu, and Management of Andhra Loyola College.

A TWO DAY WORK SHOP ON 'INNOVATIVE TRENDS IN LIFE SCIENCES'

   The Departments of Botany, Microbiology and Biotechnology organized a 2-day National Workshop on “Innovative Trends in Life Sciences” for Teachers on 26-27^th August 2011. Sixty teachers from different parts of the state as well the staff and students of the organizing departments took part in the workshop.  Sri K.Chandra Sekharan, Regional Manager, The Hindu, was the Chief Guest.  Sri S.Venkateswarlu, E.E. AP Pollution Control Board, was the Guest of Honour.

MEDICINAL PLANTS DISPLAY

Mrs.B.Vijaya Lakshmi, HOD, Biotechnology, Krishna University, delivered a lecture on “Significance of Biotechnology in Curriculum” and Mrs.B.Siva Kumari, H.O.D. Botany, ALC, spoke on “Horticulture Techniques”.  Students displayed bonsai, mushroom cultivation, rare fruits and fifty varieties of rare medicinal plants and they explained their models to the teachers.

The Andhra Loyola College organised a two-day national workshop and exhibition on “Innovative trends in life sciences” in which various scientific tools and plants were put on display for the visiting students, experts and others.

Addressing the inaugural session on Friday, the speakers said that only a correct understanding of technology concepts and innovation would help in fostering creativity and excellence among the young generation. Environmental Engineer S. Venkateswarlu said that emergence of various technologies played a key role in enhancing quality of life and use of nano technology in different aspects including prevention of pollution was yielding fruitful results.

District Education Officer K. Narasimha Rao said that there was a need for the teachers to get trained in the latest and emerging trends so that they could help this innovation in effectively transferring the knowledge to the young generation. He pointed out that the teachers had a bigger role to play as the pillars of societal progress and development.

Loyola College rector A. Stanley, principal Francis Xavier, correspondent D. Showraiah, vice principal Bujji Babu and others were present. K. Chandrasekharan, regional general manager of The Hindu , was the chief guest of the occasion. Senior faculty P. Srinivasa Rao proposed vote of thanks while B. Siva Kumari presented introduction of the theme.

Nearly 50 rare medicinal plants like aswagandha, ramaphal, lakshmanaphal and so on were there on display at the exhibition in addition to various technological tools.
