                    WORLD DIFFERENTLY –ABLED DAY (03-12-12)

           Today is World Differently-abled Day.

                   On the eve of the World Differently –Abled day  on 3^rd December-2011, the Dept of Botany conducted an educational awareness program near Ramavarapadu ring. As a rally students moved on the roads educating the people on different aspects pertaining to physically challenged  their difficulties and the available means through which they could overcome them . 
               
        "If there was any disability then it was only the bad attitude"  many opportunities and ways are broadened today for  differently abled people only thing is that they need to move towards them.

According to the recent global survey, one in every four women experience domestic violence, abuse or discrimination and the figure doubles in case of disabled women. Call it emotional insecurity or economical backwardness or dependency or helplessness or a combination of all, disabled women are invariably becoming more prone to sexual abuse and discrimination at home or at work and are worst hit in terms of physical violence, say psychologists. They say that most of their issues remain unheard due to lack of legal awareness and clarity on their rights other than suffering from isolation and the fear factor.

Who are differently abled  persons?

As per the provisions of the Persons with Disability (PWD) Act 1995 it means:-

1.      Blindness
2.      Low vision
3.      Leprosy cured
4.      Hearing impairment
5.      Locomotor disability
6.      Mental retardation and
7.      Mental illness

Disabled people do not have much access to the outside world, says founder of Global Aid Saipadma who provides training for the differently-abled people on mobility, accessibility, employ ability and sustainability. “It is sad to note that these people get into a lot of negative thinking. If they divert this energy to something productive, it would help them in the long run. Above all, they should be treated with empathy than sympathy and should be allowed to open up, mingle with others and get an access to informal gatherings. They should be able to build their own friends’ circle than just contacts,” she says.

AIDS - Awareness Day 01-December-2011

                                   AIDS Awareness Day  

The Departments of Botany, Microbiology and Biotechnology organized Slogan Writing, Essay Writing, Drawing and Poster Presentation Competitions on the topic “Effects of AIDS on the Society” on 30^th November & 1^st December 2011 in connection with the “World Aids Day”.

The Dept. of Botany organized a Slogan writing and Essay writing Competitions on 30^th Nov, 2011 on the  eve of World AIDS Day i.e. 1^st December 2011 to create awareness on this disease. The programme begin with the welcome address by Dr. B. Siva Kumari, Head, Department of Botany.  Sruthi, NCP-27  judged 1^st prize and N. Devi  Singh NCP-08 bagged 2^nd prize.  In the drawing competitions and Salar Sharief  got first prize in slogan writing event.

World AIDS Day, observed on 1st December every year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Government and health officials observe the day, often with speeches or forums on the AIDS topics. Since 1995, the President of the United States has made an official proclamation on World AIDS Day. Governments of other nations have followed suit and issued similar announcements.         

From its inception until 2004, UNAIDS spearheaded the World AIDS Day campaign, choosing annual themes in consultation with other global health organizations.

As of 2008, each year's World AIDS Day theme is chosen by the World AIDS Campaign's Global Steering Committee after extensive consultation with people, organizations and government agencies involved in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.  For each World AIDS Day from 2005 through 2010, the theme was "Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise." with a yearly sub-theme. This overarching theme is designed to encourage political leaders to keep their commitment to achieve universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care, and support by the year 2010.

This theme is not specific to World AIDS Day, but is used year-round in WAC's efforts to highlight HIV/AIDS awareness within the context of other major global events including the G8 Summit. World AIDS Campaign also conducts "in-country" campaigns throughout the world, like the Student Stop AIDS Campaign, an infection-awareness campaign targeting young people throughout the UK.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS IN DIFFERENT COMPETETITIONS

•  Ms .K. Vandu (DB 14), NSS Volunteer, won the State Level National Service Scheme Best Volunteer Award for the year 2010-2011 from Government of Andhra Pradesh and she has been presented the award on 24.09.2011 by the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, A.P.

• N. Sandeep (DB 17) and Shariff (DB 04) won the Consolation Prize in Paper Presentation competition organized by the Department of Botany, JMJ College for Woman, Tenali, on 23.09.2011.

• K. Vandu (DB-14) won the Gold Medal in triple jump and Bronze Medal in 100mts.

• Cadet Aravind (RB-67) was adjudged the Best Cadet in Drill.

The Students of the Department of Botany have actively participated in the Degree cultural festival and won 2^nd prize in Quiz and also bagged several prizes in events like first place inSolo singing and  Rangoli etc. In overall performance the Department stood 4^th place and gave tough competitions to other departments.

Botany association students have actively participated in Intramural games and Athletes. Our students  have bagged 3^rd place in Basket ball.

Paper presentation by students

The Students of Department of Botany Mr. Sandeep and Mr. Shariff of III B.Sc participated and presented a paper on Impact of Pollution on human health organized by J.M.J College for Women, Tenali on 23rd September 2011. Mr. Sandeep got consolation prize in the paper presentation.

     In connection with World ozone day the Department of Botany organized an inter-departmental paper presentation competitions  on importance of ozone layer being aware of the importance of this burning issue of today's contemporary world.

Srinivas rao,the staff co-ordinator organized the program to enrich and make  students aware in the realm of environment, the department of Botany organized interdepartmental paper presentations on  the following  topics.

            On 15-09-2011 This has been endured to students from students itself by making a platform to them for their paper presentations  on above specified topics, where  Mrs. K. Eswari  head department of P.G ,Botany and  Mr. K. Bala Chandra Head department of Microbiology are judges for this  session.

            And then on 16-09-2011  In the concerns of World Ozone Day department organized a guest lecture on global warming  by Mr.T. Sri Kumar Sr.lecturer in physics Andhra Loyola College explained need to protect environment from green house gases , global warming and pollution.  

      Prizes were awarded to the winners of the session  - Miss.K. Shoba  bagged the  first prize followed by prem kumar and azim .and a consolation prize to Mr. Jakker and then Sandeep , the student chairman proposed vote of thanks closing the program.
